Social media and dirty energy

A recent Greenpeace report has revealed which social media portals engage in renewable energy sources to power their immense data bases.

While companies such as Facebook, Google, or Apple commit to 100% renewable energy in their data centres, other portals for human interaction such as Netflix, Tumblr, or Pinterest still rely heavily on coal.

Data centres, or rather the electricity they use, are a growing problem for humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions, especially as more people can go online.

Internet data traffic is expected to triple between 2012 and 2017.
