Vertical farms in future cities

The phenomenon of utilising defunct urban spaces to encourage an environmentally friendly way to feed Earth’s growing population is on the rise in Western world.

Largest urban farm so far is set to open in Scranton, Pennsylvania, with a single space of 3.25 hectares providing enough vertical room to facilitate 17 million plants.

The promise of a new technique could ease Earth’s growing population and urbanisation, by increasing food and water security and making it less dependant on natural variables.
