Population Matters has issued an updated version of its Overshoot Index, a document that sets out the relationship between the level of consumption and renewable production in each of more than 180 countries.
Based on Global Footprint Network data, the Index indicates that 105 countries are in overshoot, meaning that their consumption is exceeding their renewable production. A significant number of other countries are close to being in overshoot and most likely soon will be due to increased population and per capita consumption. Even Africa, the continent on which per capita consumption is the lowest, is close to being in overshoot.
Globally, the level of consumption is approximately 50 per cent higher than the renewable production level.
