Motherhood should be voluntary

Motherhood should be voluntary

Mother’s Day is celebrated on different dates around the world. In the United Kingdom, the Day falls on 15 March this year. Traditionally, the Day is for celebrating and demonstrating our appreciation for our mothers. Motherhood can be a wonderful and fulfilling role, but we believe that no woman should be forced to become a mother against her will.

Pregnant woman

Across the globe, approximately 222 million women have an unmet need for contraception. In addition, abortion is still illegal in many countries and millions of young girls are married before they are emotionally or physically ready.

Women should be able to choose if and when to start a family and limit the number of children they have if they wish to do so. According to the World Health Organization, at least 15 million unwanted pregnancies could have been avoided last year if modern contraceptives had been used.

Through our PopOffsets project, you can help to fund family planning services in both developed and developing countries. PopOffsets is the only project that enables you to offset your carbon emissions by helping to improve family planning provision. CHASE Africa, for example, used its grant to provide contraceptives in remote communities in Kenya.

You can also help to prevent unwanted pregnancies by calling on your government to provide free contraceptives and to make sex education statutory.
