Environmentalist calls for smaller families

Environmentalist calls for smaller families

It is good to hear English writer, composer, musician, comedian, artist, ornithologist, conservationist and television presenter Bill Oddie calling for smaller families to address overpopulation.

Bill Oddie

Oddie is correct in saying that larger families significantly contribute to population growth, just as net migration — immigration being higher than emigration — does.

Britain, for example, has a greater proportion of larger families than most other European countries, and is one of Europe’s most densely populated countries.

Population growth is a major driver of falling quality of life in many countries.

We would like political leaders to promote the benefits to society of smaller families, including limiting family subsidies to the first two children in a household, except in cases of proven need.
