World Population Day 2012

Since the Day of Day of 7 Billion, in October 31 2011, we have had the Planet under Pressure scientific conference and the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development. Improvements in the lives of many, though not all, as indicated in the Millennium Development Goals, are overshadowed by the impact of the economic crisis and the looming impact of climate change, resource insecurity in food, water and energy and continuing degradation of the habitat of wildlife.
Many good people are pursuing technological and equity based approaches to these problems. But slowing the growth in and then reducing human numbers has to be part of the solution. That is why today’s London Summit on Family Planning is so important. Making a step change in ensuring affordable access to family planning information and services is critical. Alongside this, must come two further elements: community support for the use of such methods and the promotion of the benefits of smaller families.
